Western is not a typical university with a large mix of undergraduate majors. It is a private, nonprofit university built around professional and graduate health education. Its main campus is in Pomona, California, and it also has a campus in Lebanon, Oregon. Its academic areas range from osteopathic medicine and dentistry to pharmacy, veterinary medicine, optometry, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, podiatric medicine, medical sciences, and healthcare administration.

That wide range can make WesternU look simple at first and complicated once you start to compare programs. Each degree has its own admission route, cost, campus, professional requirements, and career path. A student interested in veterinary medicine will face a very different process from someone who wants to study nursing or physical therapy.

A University Built Around Healthcare Careers

Western makes more sense once you know how it started. Story began in 1977 with the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, often called COMP. The first class had 36 students in 1978. COMP was created during a period when the western United States faced a shortage of primary care physicians. It received full accreditation in 1982.

Addition of the College of Pharmacy led to a major institutional change. In 1996, the school adopted the name Western University of Health Sciences. Graduate Nursing followed in 1998. The College of Veterinary Medicine was also established that year. Dental Medicine, Optometry, and Podiatric Medicine welcomed their first classes in 2009.

Pomona Is Home to the Main Western Campus

Pomona serves as Western’s main academic center. The city sits in Southern California, east of Los Angeles. A broad mix of Western programs connects to the California campus. College of Health Sciences programs include the Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Science in Medical Sciences, and Master of Healthcare Administration.

Other Western professional areas include osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, optometry, nursing, and podiatric medicine. Campus location deserves attention before an application goes out. Not every program is available at every Western location.

WesternU’s Lebanon Campus

Lebanon, Oregon, is the university’s second major location. Western’s presence in the Northwest developed from an earlier medical education track. Its osteopathic medical school location in Lebanon opened in 2011. Another expansion came in 2021 when the College of Health Sciences-Northwest welcomed its first Doctor of Physical Therapy class.

Osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, and nursing are among the areas connected to Western Oregon. A Master of Science in Nursing-Entry program is expected to welcome its first Oregon students in fall 2027. Applicants interested in Lebanon should check their exact program before making plans around the Oregon campus.

Healthcare Programs at WesternU

One reason WesternU attracts several types of health professions students is the range of fields under one institution.

Academic areas include:

  • • Osteopathic Medicine
  • • Dental Medicine
  • • Veterinary Medicine
  • • Pharmacy
  • • Optometry
  • • Podiatric Medicine
  • • Physical Therapy
  • • Physician Assistant Studies
  • • Nursing
  • • Medical Sciences
  • • Healthcare Administration

Each area leads toward a different professional path. Students who want to understand how different healthcare degrees connect to specific careers can also explore health sciences degree programs  before choosing a professional path.

Osteopathic Medical Education

COMP remains an important part of Western because osteopathic medicine is where the institution began. Students in osteopathic medical education work toward the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree or DO. A DO is a physician degree. Osteopathic medical education also has a tradition that emphasizes whole-person care and the relationship between different aspects of a patient’s health.

Western later brought osteopathic medical education to Oregon as well. Students interested in this route should look beyond the DO title. Campus location, clinical education, admission requirements, curriculum, and program accreditation all deserve separate review.

Dentistry, Optometry and Podiatry

A major academic expansion took place in 2009. That year, Western welcomed its first classes in Dental Medicine, Optometry, and Podiatric Medicine. Dental education centers on oral health. Optometry focuses on vision and eye care. Podiatric medicine addresses conditions related to the foot, ankle, and associated structures, with both medical and surgical care involved in the profession. Students interested in these fields need to consider the professional license attached to the degree, not just the subjects studied at university.

Veterinary Medicine at WesternU

Human healthcare is not the only focus at Western. Its College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1998. The Veterinary Clinical Center followed in 2008. Students who enter the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program make a substantial financial commitment.

WesternU’s published 2026–27 student budget lists $71,170 in DVM tuition for each of the four years. Tuition does not represent the entire cost. Health insurance, university fees, books, transportation, housing, and other expenses can raise the actual amount needed. This is one of the clearest examples of why a professional degree should be evaluated through its full cost rather than the tuition figure alone.

Physical Therapy Has California and Oregon Options

Doctor of Physical Therapy education is available through Western in both California and Oregon. The Oregon program operates through the College of Health Sciences-Northwest in Lebanon. Western U’s 2026–27 Oregon DPT catalog lists annual tuition of $53,961.

Other costs can include student service fees, lab fees, books, equipment, background checks, and additional program expenses. A student comparing DPT programs should calculate those extra costs before deciding which school appears less expensive.

Nursing Programs at WesternU

Western U’s nursing education does not serve only one type of applicant. Graduate options can serve nurses at different points in their careers. Routes include options connected to associate-degree nurses and bachelor’s-prepared registered nurses. Areas listed within Western nursing education include family nurse practitioner education, clinical nurse leadership, ambulatory care nursing, and health systems leadership.

An experienced registered nurse who wants an advanced role has a different academic background from a student who seeks an entry-level master’s route. Applicants should match their current qualification to the correct program before they compare tuition or deadlines.

Medical Sciences Is Not a Medical Degree

Program names can sometimes create confusion, especially for students new to U.S. health education. WesternU offers a Master of Science in Medical Sciences. Completing that degree does not make a graduate a physician. Its 2026–27 published budget lists $34,444 in tuition for the MSMS program.

Listed tuition and fees reach an estimated $41,876 once charges such as student services, graduation, lab, and health insurance fees are included. That difference is worth noticing. A tuition number on its own can give an incomplete picture of what a student may actually pay.

Team-Based Healthcare Education

Western has students who prepare for very different clinical roles. That creates room for interprofessional education. Its Interprofessional Practice and Education approach allows students from different health fields to learn from, with, and about one another.

Healthcare outside university rarely happens through one profession alone. A patient may deal with a physician, nurse, pharmacist, physical therapist, dentist, optometrist, and other professionals during the course of care. Each has a separate responsibility, yet communication between them can affect the patient.

WesternU Admission Requirements

Academic performance can carry significant weight in professional health education. It is rarely the only part worth preparing. Depending on the program, an application may also involve clinical exposure, service, prerequisite performance, recommendations, communication skills, interviews, and knowledge of the chosen profession.

A pharmacy applicant should have a realistic idea of pharmacy practice. Someone interested in physical therapy should understand the daily role of a physical therapist. An osteopathic medicine applicant should know what the DO path involves. That knowledge also helps at interview time.

Scholarships and Student Loans

Western provides financial aid information and scholarship resources. Its scholarship database includes university and outside opportunities. Western reports scholarship amounts that range from $100 to $20,000. Eligibility can depend on academic performance, financial need, leadership, community involvement, work experience, or other criteria.

Eligible students may also have access to federal financial aid. Available resources can include FAFSA information, federal loans, university loans, scholarships, and repayment guidance. A scholarship and a student loan should not be treated as the same type of financial help. Scholarship money can directly reduce the amount a student needs to cover. A loan creates a future repayment obligation and may add interest.

A Western Decision Starts with the Profession

Someone interested in Western University of Health Sciences has several very different academic routes under the same university name. Medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, optometry, podiatric medicine, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, medical sciences, and healthcare administration do not lead to interchangeable careers.

After that, examine the exact WesternU program. Check prerequisites, curriculum, clinical education, campus location, accreditation, tuition, total cost, graduation outcomes, and the route from the degree to professional licensure. A healthcare degree can require years of study and a major financial commitment. Program-level details therefore tell you far more than the university name alone.
